How to Clear Paper Jams from Your Printer
Paper jams occur when sheets get stuck in your printer's paper path, blocking the printing process. Clearing them properly prevents damage to both the paper feed mechanism and print heads.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it. Press the power button to turn off your printer completely. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer. This prevents the printer from attempting to move internal components while you remove the jam.
- Open all printer access panels. Lift the printer's top cover or scanner lid. Open the front cover if your printer has one. Remove the paper tray completely by pulling it straight out. This gives you maximum access to see where the paper is stuck.
- Locate the jammed paper. Look inside the printer for any visible paper. Check the paper path from the tray area through to the output tray. Use your phone's flashlight to illuminate dark areas inside the printer if needed.
- Remove the jammed paper carefully. Grasp the visible edge of the jammed paper with both hands. Pull slowly and steadily in the direction the paper normally travels. Do not yank or use excessive force. If the paper tears, remove all visible pieces.
- Check for remaining paper fragments. Examine the entire paper path for small torn pieces of paper. Remove any fragments you find with tweezers or your fingers. Pay special attention to roller areas where pieces commonly stick.
- Inspect and clean the paper rollers. Look for dust, ink, or paper residue on the rubber rollers. Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and gently wipe the rollers. Rotate them manually to clean the entire surface.
- Reassemble and test the printer. Close all covers and panels. Reinsert the paper tray with a small stack of fresh paper. Plug in the power cord and turn on the printer. Print a test page to confirm normal operation.
