How to Fix OneDrive Not Syncing

OneDrive sync failures prevent your files from updating across devices and can disrupt your workflow. These troubleshooting steps resolve the most common sync issues including stuck files, authentication problems, and storage conflicts.

  1. Check OneDrive status and restart the application. Right-click the OneDrive icon in your system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac). If you see a red X or warning icon, note any error messages displayed. Close OneDrive completely through Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on Mac, then restart it from your Applications folder or Start menu.
  2. Verify your internet connection and OneDrive service status. Test your internet connection by opening a web browser and navigating to onedrive.com. Sign in with your account credentials to confirm the web version works properly. Check the Microsoft 365 Service Health page to verify OneDrive services are operational in your region.
  3. Check available storage space. Open OneDrive settings by right-clicking the system tray icon and selecting Settings. Navigate to the Account tab to view your storage usage. If storage is full, delete unnecessary files or upgrade your storage plan. Also verify your local hard drive has sufficient free space for syncing.
  4. Reset OneDrive sync. Press Windows+R, type %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset and press Enter. Wait for the OneDrive icon to disappear from your system tray, then manually restart OneDrive from your Start menu. This clears corrupted sync data without deleting your files.
  5. Check file and folder restrictions. Review your files for unsupported characters in names including < > : " | ? * or files larger than 250GB. Rename any files starting with tildes (~) or containing only spaces. Move problematic files to a temporary location, let OneDrive sync, then rename and move them back with compliant names.
  6. Clear OneDrive cache and temporary files. Close OneDrive completely, then navigate to %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\logs on Windows or ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.OneDriveSyncClientSuite/OneDriveStandaloneSuite/Logs on Mac. Delete all files in the logs folder. Also clear the settings cache by deleting files in %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\settings.
  7. Unlink and relink your OneDrive account. Open OneDrive Settings, go to the Account tab, and click Unlink this PC. Sign out completely and restart your computer. Launch OneDrive again and sign in with your Microsoft account credentials. Reconfigure your sync folders and wait for the initial sync to complete.
