How to Fix No Sound on Mac

Mac audio problems can stem from system settings, hardware connections, or software conflicts. These systematic troubleshooting steps will restore sound to your Mac in most cases.

  1. Check the volume and mute settings. Click the volume icon in the menu bar or press the volume up key on your keyboard. Ensure the volume slider is not at zero and the mute button is not enabled. If you see a crossed-out speaker icon, click it to unmute.
  2. Verify the correct audio output device. Open System Preferences > Sound > Output tab. Select your intended output device from the list (Internal Speakers for built-in audio, or your external speakers/headphones). Test the sound using the alert sound dropdown menu at the bottom of the window.
  3. Reset the Core Audio service. Open Terminal from Applications > Utilities. Type 'sudo killall coreaudiod' and press Enter. Enter your admin password when prompted. The Core Audio service will restart automatically, which often resolves software-based audio issues.
  4. Check for stuck digital audio output. Look at your headphone jack for a red light, which indicates digital audio output is stuck on. Insert and remove headphones or speakers several times to dislodge the internal switch. Alternatively, use a toothpick to gently toggle the internal mechanism.
  5. Reset NVRAM and SMC. Shut down your Mac completely. For NVRAM reset: turn on while holding Option + Command + P + R for 20 seconds, then release. For SMC reset on MacBooks: hold Shift + Control + Option + power button for 10 seconds, then release and restart.
  6. Update macOS and audio drivers. Open System Preferences > Software Update and install any available updates. Restart your Mac after updates complete. For external audio devices, visit the manufacturer's website to download the latest drivers.
  7. Test with different audio sources. Try playing audio from multiple applications like Music, Safari, or QuickTime Player. Open Audio MIDI Setup from Applications > Utilities to check if your audio device shows the correct sample rate and bit depth settings.
