How to Fix iCloud Storage Full

When iCloud storage fills up, your devices stop backing up photos, messages, and app data. This creates sync issues and prevents new content from saving to the cloud. Follow these steps to reclaim space or upgrade your storage.

  1. Check your current storage usage. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad. Tap your name at the top, then select iCloud. Tap Manage Storage to see which apps and data consume the most space. Note which categories use the largest amounts.
  2. Delete unnecessary photos and videos. Open the Photos app and tap Albums at the bottom. Select Recently Deleted and tap Select, then Delete All to permanently remove these files. Return to Photos and delete unwanted videos, Live Photos, or duplicate images that consume large amounts of storage.
  3. Remove old device backups. In Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Storage, tap Backups. Review the list of backed-up devices and delete backups from devices you no longer own or use. Tap the backup name, then Delete Backup to confirm removal.
  4. Clear Messages storage. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Storage > Messages. Tap Disable and Delete to remove message attachments from iCloud. Alternatively, open Messages settings and set message history to delete after 30 days or 1 year instead of keeping forever.
  5. Manage iCloud Drive files. Open the Files app and tap Browse, then iCloud Drive. Sort by file size to identify large files. Delete unnecessary documents, presentations, or downloaded files. Empty the Recently Deleted folder in Files to permanently remove these items.
  6. Turn off iCloud sync for unused apps. Return to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud. Review the list of apps using iCloud and toggle off any you don't need synced. This prevents these apps from consuming iCloud storage while maintaining local functionality.
  7. Upgrade storage or create family plan. If you need more space, tap Upgrade to iCloud+ in the storage management screen. Select 50GB ($0.99/month), 200GB ($2.99/month), or 2TB ($9.99/month). The 200GB and 2TB plans can be shared with family members through Family Sharing.
