How to Fix Dead Pixels on a Screen

Dead pixels appear as black dots that won't display color on LCD, OLED, or LED screens. These pixel defects can often be revived using software stimulation, gentle pressure, or controlled heat application.

  1. Identify the pixel type. Display a pure white image fullscreen to locate dark spots (dead pixels) versus colored dots (stuck pixels). Dead pixels remain black while stuck pixels show red, green, or blue. Take a screenshot to confirm the defect is physical, not software-related — dead pixels won't appear in screenshots.
  2. Run pixel-fixing software. Download JScreenFix or UDPixel for Windows, or use online pixel fixers that rapidly cycle colors. Run the software for 10-30 minutes with flashing patterns covering the dead pixel area. This electrical stimulation can unstick pixels by forcing rapid color changes.
  3. Apply gentle pressure. Turn off your monitor and wrap a damp cloth around a pencil eraser or stylus tip. Gently press the dead pixel area with small circular motions for 10-15 seconds. Turn the display back on to check results. Repeat 2-3 times if necessary.
  4. Try controlled heat application. Display a black screen and use a hair dryer on low heat setting 6 inches from the dead pixel for 5-10 seconds. Immediately switch to a white screen to check if the pixel activates. The heat can expand stuck liquid crystal material.
  5. Perform a power cycle reset. Unplug your monitor for 24 hours to fully discharge internal capacitors. This allows liquid crystals to return to their natural state. Reconnect power and check for pixel recovery during startup when the display cycles through initialization patterns.
  6. Check warranty coverage. Count total dead pixels and check your manufacturer's dead pixel policy. Most brands replace screens with 5+ dead pixels or any dead pixels in the center area. Submit a warranty claim with photos showing the defects against solid color backgrounds.
