How to Fix Bluetooth Device Won't Connect

Bluetooth connection failures happen when devices can't establish or maintain their wireless link. These steps address the most common causes, from interference to driver issues.

  1. Check device compatibility and distance. Verify both devices support the same Bluetooth version and are within 30 feet of each other. Remove physical obstructions like walls or metal objects between devices. Check that neither device is already connected to the maximum number of Bluetooth devices.
  2. Enable Bluetooth and make devices discoverable. Turn Bluetooth off and on again on both devices. On Windows, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices and toggle Bluetooth. On Mac, click the Bluetooth icon in menu bar and select Turn Bluetooth Off, then On. Put the target device in pairing mode according to its manual.
  3. Clear Bluetooth cache and reset network settings. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Bluetooth > Storage > Clear Cache. On iOS, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. On Windows, run Windows + R, type services.msc, find Bluetooth Support Service, right-click and select Restart.
  4. Remove existing pairings and forget devices. Delete the problematic device from your Bluetooth settings. On Windows, click the three dots next to the device name and select Remove device. On Mac, Control-click the device and select Remove. Also remove your computer or phone from the other device's paired list.
  5. Update Bluetooth drivers and software. On Windows, open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click your Bluetooth adapter and select Update driver. On Mac, check System Settings > General > Software Update. Update the firmware on your Bluetooth device using the manufacturer's app or website instructions.
  6. Restart Bluetooth services and reset adapters. On Windows, run Windows + X, select Device Manager, find your Bluetooth adapter under Bluetooth, right-click and select Disable device, wait 10 seconds, then Enable device. On Mac, hold Shift + Option and click the Bluetooth icon, then select Reset the Bluetooth module.
  7. Eliminate interference and try fresh pairing. Turn off other Bluetooth devices, WiFi routers, and 2.4GHz devices near your workspace. Restart both devices completely. Initiate pairing from the device you want to connect to, not from the computer or phone. Follow the exact pairing sequence in your device manual.
