How to Fix Black Screen of Death on Windows
The black screen of death occurs when Windows loads but displays only a black screen with or without a cursor. This typically indicates driver conflicts, hardware issues, or corrupted system files that prevent the desktop from loading properly.
- Force restart your computer. Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the computer shuts down completely. Wait 30 seconds, then press the power button to restart. This clears temporary system errors and resets hardware connections that may cause display issues.
- Check all cable connections. Verify the monitor cable is securely connected to both the computer and display. Try a different video cable if available. For computers with both integrated and dedicated graphics, test both video output ports to determine if the issue is port-specific.
- Boot into Safe Mode. Restart the computer and immediately press F8 repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears. Select Safe Mode with Networking using the arrow keys and press Enter. If Windows loads normally in Safe Mode, the issue is likely software-related.
- Update or rollback display drivers. In Safe Mode, right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver. If recently updated, select Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver instead.
- Run Windows startup repair. Insert a Windows installation USB or DVD and boot from it. Select your language, then click Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Let Windows automatically detect and fix startup problems.
- Perform System File Checker scan. Boot from Windows installation media and select Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Wait for the scan to complete and repair any corrupted system files.
- Test with minimal hardware configuration. Shut down and disconnect all unnecessary peripherals including external drives, printers, and additional monitors. Remove all but one RAM stick if multiple are installed. Restart to see if the black screen persists with minimal hardware.
