How to Fix Battery Not Detected on Windows

Windows may fail to detect your laptop battery due to driver conflicts, power management issues, or hardware problems. This guide provides systematic troubleshooting steps to restore battery recognition and charging functionality.

  1. Run Windows Power Troubleshooter. Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Click Power and select Run the troubleshooter. Follow the on-screen prompts to automatically detect and fix common power-related issues. Restart your computer after completion.
  2. Update Battery Drivers. Right-click Start button and select Device Manager. Expand Batteries section and right-click Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery. Select Update driver for each device. Choose Search automatically for drivers and let Windows install updates.
  3. Uninstall and Reinstall Battery Drivers. In Device Manager, right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall device. Confirm the action and restart your computer. Windows will automatically reinstall the battery driver during startup.
  4. Reset Windows Power Management. Open Command Prompt as administrator. Type powercfg /restoredefaultschemes and press Enter. Then type powercfg -h off followed by powercfg -h on to reset hibernation settings. Restart your computer to apply changes.
  5. Check Battery Hardware Connection. Shut down your laptop completely and remove the power adapter. If your battery is removable, carefully remove it and inspect the connection points for corrosion or debris. Clean contacts with isopropyl alcohol if needed, then firmly reinsert the battery.
  6. Perform System File Check. Open Command Prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow. Wait for the scan to complete, which may take 15-30 minutes. If corrupted files are found, the tool will automatically repair them. Restart your computer after the process finishes.
  7. Update Windows and BIOS. Check Windows Update in Settings > Update & Security for any pending system updates. Install all available updates and restart. Visit your laptop manufacturer's website to check for BIOS updates specific to your model and install if available.
