How to Fix Audio Out of Sync with Video

Audio sync issues create a jarring viewing experience where dialogue doesn't match lip movements. These problems stem from processing delays, codec mismatches, or hardware bottlenecks that can be resolved with systematic troubleshooting.

  1. Check your audio output device. Right-click the speaker icon in your system tray and select 'Sound settings' on Windows or click the Apple menu > System Preferences > Sound on Mac. Switch to built-in speakers temporarily to test if the sync issue persists. External speakers, soundbars, and Bluetooth devices often introduce processing delays.
  2. Restart the video application. Close your video player completely using Alt+F4 on Windows or Cmd+Q on Mac. Wait 10 seconds, then reopen the application and reload your video file. This clears temporary buffers and codec caches that may have become corrupted during playback.
  3. Adjust audio delay compensation. In VLC, go to Tools > Track Synchronization and adjust the 'Audio track synchronization' value. Use negative values if audio plays before video, positive values if audio lags behind video. For Windows Media Player, press Ctrl+3 to access audio settings. Start with 100ms adjustments and fine-tune from there.
  4. Update your audio drivers. Open Device Manager on Windows by pressing Win+X and selecting it from the menu. Expand 'Sound, video and game controllers', right-click your audio device, and select 'Update driver'. On Mac, audio drivers update automatically with system updates, so click Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update to check for updates.
  5. Disable audio enhancements. Right-click the speaker icon in Windows system tray, select 'Sounds', click the 'Playback' tab, select your audio device, click 'Properties', then the 'Enhancements' tab, and check 'Disable all enhancements'. On Mac, these effects are typically found in third-party audio software rather than system settings.
  6. Change video hardware acceleration. In your video player settings, look for 'Hardware acceleration' or 'GPU decoding' options and toggle them. In VLC, go to Tools > Preferences > Input/Codecs and change 'Hardware-accelerated decoding'. In browsers, type chrome://settings/system in Chrome or about:preferences#general in Firefox to find hardware acceleration settings.
  7. Test with different video formats. Convert your video file to a different format using HandBrake or similar software. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio typically has the best compatibility across devices. If streaming, try lowering the video quality to reduce processing overhead that can cause sync drift over time.
