How to Fix Android Screen Not Responding

An unresponsive Android screen prevents you from using your device normally. This issue stems from software glitches, app conflicts, or hardware problems that you can resolve through systematic troubleshooting.

  1. Force restart your device. Press and hold the Power button and Volume Down button simultaneously for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes black and the device restarts. This clears temporary system files and resets the touch input system. Wait for the device to fully boot before testing the screen.
  2. Remove the screen protector and case. Remove any screen protector, case, or accessories touching the display. Damaged or improperly applied screen protectors can interfere with touch sensitivity. Clean the screen with a microfiber cloth to remove dirt, moisture, or residue that might block touch input.
  3. Test in Safe Mode. Power off the device completely. Press and hold the Power button until the manufacturer logo appears, then immediately press and hold the Volume Down button until Safe Mode appears at the bottom of the screen. Test the touchscreen functionality with only system apps running.
  4. Clear system cache partition. Turn off the device and boot into recovery mode by holding Power + Volume Up + Home (or Power + Volume Up on newer devices). Use volume buttons to navigate to 'Wipe Cache Partition' and confirm with the Power button. Select 'Reboot System Now' when complete.
  5. Check for software updates. Open Settings > System > System Update (or Settings > Software Update on Samsung). Download and install any available updates. Software bugs in the current Android version can cause touch input problems that updates resolve.
  6. Reset touch sensitivity settings. Navigate to Settings > Display > Touch Sensitivity and toggle it off and on. Some devices have this under Settings > Advanced Features > Touch Sensitivity. This recalibrates the touch input system and can resolve sensitivity issues.
  7. Perform a factory reset. Open Settings > System > Reset > Factory Data Reset (or Settings > General Management > Reset on Samsung). Back up important data first, then confirm the reset. This eliminates software conflicts and returns the device to its original state.
