How to Fix a Phone Screen with Flickering

A flickering phone screen usually stems from software conflicts, display settings, or hardware damage. Most flickering issues resolve through systematic troubleshooting that addresses both software and hardware causes.

  1. Restart your phone completely. Hold the power button and volume down button simultaneously for 10-15 seconds until the device powers off. Wait 30 seconds, then press the power button to restart. This clears temporary software conflicts that often cause display flickering.
  2. Adjust display refresh rate settings. Navigate to Settings > Display > Motion smoothness (Android) or Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion (iOS). Switch to 60Hz or enable Reduce Motion. High refresh rates can trigger flickering on aging displays or with certain apps.
  3. Disable auto-brightness and adaptive display. Go to Settings > Display > Brightness and turn off Adaptive brightness (Android) or Auto-Brightness (iOS). Set brightness manually to 50%. Auto-brightness algorithms can create rapid brightness changes that appear as flickering.
  4. Boot into safe mode. Hold the power button, then press and hold Power off until Safe mode appears (Android). On iOS, no safe mode exists, so delete recently installed apps instead. Safe mode disables third-party apps that may conflict with display drivers.
  5. Check for loose connections. Remove your phone case and gently press around the screen edges, particularly near the charging port and speaker. Apply light pressure to the back panel near the display connector. Loose internal connections often cause intermittent flickering.
  6. Update your phone software. Go to Settings > System Update (Android) or Settings > General > Software Update (iOS). Install any available updates. Display driver updates frequently resolve compatibility issues causing screen flickering.
  7. Factory reset as final software solution. Back up your data, then go to Settings > System > Reset (Android) or Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings (iOS). This eliminates all software causes of flickering but requires full device setup afterward.
