How to Fix 100% Disk Usage on Windows

When Windows Task Manager shows 100% disk usage, your computer slows to a crawl with laggy applications and delayed responses. This issue typically stems from Windows services, antivirus scans, or hardware problems consuming all available disk resources.

  1. Open Task Manager and identify the culprit. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Click the Processes tab and click the Disk column header to sort by disk usage. Note which processes show high disk activity percentages.
  2. Disable Windows Search service. Press Windows+R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Scroll down to Windows Search, right-click it, and select Properties. Change Startup type to Disabled and click Stop if the service is running. Click OK to save changes.
  3. Check antivirus real-time scanning. Open your antivirus program and locate real-time protection settings. Temporarily disable real-time scanning for 15 minutes to test if disk usage drops. If usage normalizes, add system folders to your antivirus exclusion list or schedule scans for off-hours.
  4. Reset virtual memory settings. Press Windows+X and select System. Click Advanced system settings, then Settings under Performance. Navigate to the Advanced tab and click Change under Virtual memory. Uncheck 'Automatically manage paging file size' and select 'System managed size'. Click Set, then OK.
  5. Update disk drivers and firmware. Press Windows+X and select Device Manager. Expand Disk drives, right-click your main drive, and select Update driver. Choose 'Search automatically for drivers'. Additionally, visit your drive manufacturer's website to check for firmware updates.
  6. Run disk error check. Open File Explorer and right-click your C: drive. Select Properties, navigate to the Tools tab, and click Check under Error checking. Select 'Scan drive' and allow Windows to scan for and repair disk errors.
  7. Disable Superfetch and Windows Tips. Press Windows+R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find 'SysMain' (Superfetch), right-click it, and set Startup type to Disabled. Also open Settings > System > Notifications & actions and turn off 'Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows'.
