How to Clear Cache on Mac
Cache files accumulate over time on your Mac, consuming storage space and potentially causing performance issues. Clearing cache removes temporary files that apps and your system create to speed up operations, freeing up disk space and resolving software conflicts.
- Access the Library folder. Open Finder and press Command+Shift+G to open the Go to Folder dialog. Type ~/Library and click Go. This reveals the hidden Library folder where cache files are stored.
- Clear user cache files. Navigate to the Caches folder within Library. Select all folders inside by pressing Command+A, then move them to Trash by pressing Command+Delete. These are application-specific cache files that can be safely removed.
- Clear system cache files. Press Command+Shift+G again and type /Library/Caches to access system-wide cache files. Delete the contents of this folder using the same method. You may need to enter your administrator password for some deletions.
- Clear browser cache. For Safari, go to Safari > Preferences > Privacy and click Manage Website Data, then Remove All. For Chrome, press Command+Shift+Delete and select cached images and files. For Firefox, press Command+Shift+Delete and check cached web content.
- Empty the Trash. Right-click the Trash in your Dock and select Empty Trash. Confirm the deletion when prompted. This permanently removes all cache files you deleted in the previous steps.
- Restart your Mac. Click the Apple menu and select Restart. This ensures all cache-related processes reset properly and your system recognizes the freed storage space immediately.
