How to Clean Up Startup Programs on Windows

Too many programs launching at startup slow down your computer's boot time and consume system resources. Windows provides built-in tools to identify and disable unnecessary startup programs, improving your computer's performance and reducing boot delays.

  1. Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager directly. Alternatively, right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager from the context menu. If Task Manager opens in compact view, click More details at the bottom to expand it.
  2. Navigate to the Startup tab. Click the Startup tab at the top of Task Manager. This displays all programs configured to launch when Windows starts, along with their current status and system impact rating.
  3. Review startup impact ratings. Examine the Startup impact column, which shows High, Medium, Low, or Not measured for each program. Focus on programs marked as High impact first, as these consume the most resources during startup. Click the Startup impact column header to sort programs by impact level.
  4. Identify safe programs to disable. Look for non-essential programs like media players, chat applications, or third-party updaters that you don't need immediately at startup. Avoid disabling Windows system programs, antivirus software, or hardware-related programs unless you're certain they're unnecessary.
  5. Disable unnecessary programs. Right-click the program you want to disable and select Disable from the context menu. The Status column will change from Enabled to Disabled. Repeat this process for other unnecessary programs you identified.
  6. Use Windows Settings for additional control. Press Windows key + I to open Settings, then navigate to Apps > Startup. This view shows the same startup programs with on/off toggles and includes additional information about each program's publisher and startup impact.
  7. Restart and verify changes. Restart your computer to test the changes. Time your boot process to see the improvement, then check Task Manager's Startup tab to confirm disabled programs remain off. Monitor your system for a few days to ensure no important functionality was affected.
