How to Check Laptop Battery Health on Mac
Your Mac tracks detailed battery health data including cycle count, maximum capacity, and condition status. This information helps you determine when your battery needs replacement and monitor its degradation over time.
- Hold Option and click the Apple menu. Press and hold the Option key on your keyboard, then click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen. This reveals additional system information options in the dropdown menu.
- Select System Information. Click System Information from the Apple menu. This opens the System Information app, which displays comprehensive hardware and software details about your Mac.
- Navigate to Power in the Hardware section. In the left sidebar, expand the Hardware section if it's not already open. Click Power to display battery information. The main window will populate with detailed battery statistics.
- Review battery cycle count and condition. Locate the Cycle Count field to see how many charge cycles your battery has completed. Check the Condition field for your battery's current status: Normal, Replace Soon, Replace Now, or Service Battery.
- Check maximum capacity and current charge. Find the Full Charge Capacity and Design Capacity values. Divide full charge capacity by design capacity and multiply by 100 to calculate your battery's maximum capacity percentage. Also note the current Amperage and Voltage readings.
- Use Activity Monitor for real-time battery usage. Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities and click the Energy tab. This shows which apps consume the most battery power and provides a 12-hour energy impact graph.
- Check battery menu for quick status updates. Click the battery icon in your menu bar while holding Option to see condition, cycle count, and power source information. This provides quick access to key battery health metrics without opening System Information.
