How to Supercharge Windows with Microsoft PowerToys

Master Windows productivity with Microsoft PowerToys. Learn to install, configure, and use key utilities like FancyZones, PowerRename, and Text Extractor.

  1. Install Microsoft PowerToys. Download the latest executable installer from the official Microsoft PowerToys GitHub repository releases page. Run the .exe file and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation with default settings.
  2. Configure PowerToys settings. Launch the PowerToys Settings application from the Start menu or the system tray icon. Review each utility in the left-hand sidebar to enable or disable specific features based on your workflow requirements.
  3. Arrange windows with FancyZones. Open the FancyZones settings and click Launch layout editor. Create a custom window grid or select a predefined template, then hold the Shift key while dragging a window to snap it into your designated zone.
  4. Perform advanced file renaming. Select multiple files in File Explorer, right-click, and select PowerRename from the context menu. Use the search-and-replace interface to apply regex-based renaming rules, then click Apply to confirm the changes.
  5. Extract text from images. Activate the Text Extractor tool, then click and drag your cursor over any portion of the screen containing text. The extracted characters are automatically copied to your clipboard, ready for pasting into any application.
  6. Launch applications with PowerToys Run. Trigger the command launcher to perform quick searches for files, applications, or active processes. Type your query directly into the search bar, then press Enter to execute the selected item or result.
