1. Configure the Snipping Tool default behavior. Open the Snipping Tool from the Start menu. Click the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner and select Settings to ensure 'Automatically save screenshots' is toggled on, which sends captures directly to your Pictures > Screenshots folder.
2. Trigger the selection overlay. Press the Windows key + Shift + S to instantly darken the screen and bring up the capture toolbar. This overlay allows you to choose between rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen modes.
3. Set a capture delay for menus. If you need to capture a drop-down menu or hover state, open the Snipping Tool app directly instead of using the shortcut. Select the clock icon to set a 3, 5, or 10-second delay, which gives you time to open the necessary UI element before the screen freezes.
