How to Show File Extensions in Windows 11

Enable file extensions in Windows 11 to see file types for all documents. Follow these direct steps to manage your file view settings.

  1. Open File Explorer. Click the File Explorer icon located on your taskbar or press the Windows key + E on your keyboard. This launches the navigation window required to adjust folder settings.
  2. Access the View menu. Locate the View button in the top menu ribbon of the File Explorer window. Click the button to reveal a dropdown menu containing layout and display options.
  3. Select the Show submenu. Hover your cursor over the Show option at the bottom of the View menu. A secondary sub-menu will appear displaying various file display toggle switches.
  4. Enable File name extensions. Click on File name extensions from the secondary menu. A checkmark will appear next to the item, and File Explorer will immediately update to display extensions for all visible files.
