How to Scan Downloads with Windows Security

Use Windows Security to scan specific files and folders for malware before you open them. Maintain system integrity with manual scan procedures.

  1. Open File Explorer. Press the Windows key and type File Explorer, then press Enter. Navigate to the Downloads folder or the specific directory where your file is stored.
  2. Access the context menu. Right-click the downloaded file you intend to scan. If you are using Windows 11, click Show more options at the bottom of the initial menu to reveal the full legacy context menu.
  3. Initiate the scan. Select Scan with Microsoft Defender from the list. The Windows Security window will automatically launch to display the scan progress.
  4. Review the scan results. Wait for the progress bar to complete. If the file is safe, a notification will appear stating that no threats were found. If a threat is detected, the application will automatically quarantine or remove the file based on your security settings.
  5. Check Protection History. Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security. Navigate to Virus & threat protection and click Protection history to view logs of all recent scans and any blocked items.
