How to Protect Your OneDrive Personal Vault on Windows
Secure your sensitive files in OneDrive Personal Vault. Learn how to configure security settings and lock your vault effectively on Windows.
- Enable and verify Personal Vault status. Open File Explorer and select the OneDrive folder from the left-hand navigation pane. Locate the Personal Vault folder icon and double-click it to initiate the setup wizard. Follow the on-screen prompts to verify your identity using two-factor authentication.
- Configure automatic locking duration. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray. Select the Gear icon and choose Settings. Navigate to the Account tab and locate the Personal Vault section to adjust the auto-lock timeout duration to your preferred interval.
- Manually lock the vault. Right-click the Personal Vault folder within your OneDrive directory. Select Lock Personal Vault from the context menu. This immediately terminates the active session and requires re-authentication to access files.
- Link Windows Hello for faster access. Navigate to Windows Settings, then Accounts, then Sign-in options. Ensure Windows Hello Fingerprint or Face recognition is configured. This allows you to unlock the Personal Vault without entering a secondary PIN or verification code.
- Review active sessions. Log into your Microsoft account via a web browser and navigate to Security. View your sign-in activity to ensure no unauthorized devices have accessed your OneDrive cloud environment. Revoke access immediately if any unrecognized entries appear.
