How to Manage and Force Windows Security Updates

Ensure your PC remains secure by mastering Windows Update settings. Learn how to verify, trigger, and automate critical security patches for Windows 11.

  1. Open the Windows Update interface. Press the Windows key and select the Settings icon. Navigate to Windows Update in the left-hand sidebar to view the current status of your system security and patch availability.
  2. Check for pending updates. Click the Check for updates button in the top right corner. Windows will scan Microsoft servers for any missing security definitions or cumulative updates.
  3. Adjust active hours. Select Advanced options, then click Active hours. Set these to match your standard workflow to prevent the system from restarting for updates while you are working.
  4. Enable optional updates. Within the Advanced options menu, select Optional updates. Expand the Driver updates list and install any hardware-related firmware patches that contribute to system security.
  5. Install and restart. Once downloads complete, click the Restart now button. Do not power off your machine manually while the Windows update progress bar is active to avoid file corruption.
