How to Export Browser Bookmarks Before Switching PCs

Secure your browser data. Follow these steps to export bookmarks from Chrome, Edge, and Firefox before migrating to a new computer.

  1. Export bookmarks from Google Chrome. Open Chrome and press Ctrl + Shift + O to open the Bookmark Manager. Click the three-dot menu icon in the upper-right corner of the blue header bar. Select Export bookmarks and save the generated HTML file to a secure location on an external drive.
  2. Export bookmarks from Microsoft Edge. Open Edge and press Ctrl + Shift + O to open the Favorites menu. Click the three-dot icon at the top of the favorites pane and select Export favorites. Choose your save destination and confirm the export of the HTML file.
  3. Export bookmarks from Mozilla Firefox. Open Firefox and press Ctrl + Shift + O to open the Library window. Click the Import and Backup button in the toolbar, then select Export Bookmarks to HTML. Save the file to your external media device.
  4. Verify the exported files. Navigate to the folder on your external drive where you saved the files. Ensure each file has a size greater than 0 KB. If a file is 0 KB, the export was unsuccessful; repeat the process for that specific browser.
  5. Move files to your new computer. Safely eject your external drive from the old computer and connect it to your new PC. Copy the saved HTML files from the drive to a folder on your new machine's desktop for easy access during the import process.
