How to verify device encryption status on Windows

Verify your Windows device security. Learn how to check if BitLocker device encryption is active and protecting your data.

  1. Open the Settings application. Press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu. Type Settings and press Enter to launch the system configuration panel.
  2. Access Privacy & security settings. Locate the Privacy & security tab in the left-hand navigation pane. Click this tab to view the security configuration options for your device.
  3. Locate Device encryption settings. Scroll down to the Security section of the page. Click on Device encryption to open the status summary for your local drives.
  4. Review the encryption status. Observe the toggle switch status under the Device encryption heading. If the toggle is set to On, your device is actively encrypted.
  5. Confirm via command line. Open the Start menu, type cmd, and select Run as administrator. Execute manage-bde -status to see detailed drive encryption information for every volume.
