How to Change Windows Themes Safely

Learn how to safely modify your Windows 11 interface using native settings. Customizing your desktop environment ensures stability and performance.

  1. Open the Personalization menu. Right-click on any empty space on your desktop and select Personalize from the context menu. Alternatively, press Windows + I to open Settings and click the Personalization tab in the left-hand navigation pane.
  2. Navigate to Themes. Within the Personalization settings menu, click the Themes tile. This section displays your currently installed theme and provides options to browse for new ones via the Microsoft Store.
  3. Install new themes from Microsoft. Click the Browse themes button to launch the Microsoft Store. Select a theme verified by Microsoft, click Get, and wait for the installation to complete. Using the official store prevents system instability caused by third-party skinning software.
  4. Apply the selected theme. Return to the Themes menu in Settings. Locate your newly installed theme under the Current theme section and click on it to apply the color scheme, sound effects, and desktop background immediately.
  5. Customize theme elements. Adjust specific components of the active theme by visiting the Colors and Background tabs within the Personalization menu. You can toggle between Light and Dark modes or select custom accent colors to complement your chosen wallpaper.
