Learn how to configure default applications in Windows 11. Follow these steps to override system defaults for browsers, mail, and file types.

  1. Open the Settings application. Press Windows Key + I on your keyboard to launch the Settings application. Alternatively, open the Start menu and select the gear icon.
  2. Access the Apps menu. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on the Apps category. Select Default apps from the main window pane to view all installed software.
  3. Identify the application. Use the search bar labeled 'Set a default for a file type or link type' to find the specific app you wish to use as your default. Click on the application icon once it appears in the search results.
  4. Modify the default associations. Review the list of file types and link types associated with that application. Click on any file extension that currently uses a different application and select your preferred app from the list. Click Set default to confirm your choice.
  5. Confirm the changes. Close the Settings window. Open a file of the type you just modified to ensure it launches in your newly selected default application.
