Learn how to manage and change default applications in Windows 11 to ensure your preferred programs open files and links automatically.

  1. Open the Windows Settings menu. Press the Windows key on your keyboard and select the Settings gear icon. Alternatively, press Windows + I to open the application directly.
  2. Access the Apps section. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Apps. From the main panel, select Default apps to view your current application assignments.
  3. Locate the specific application. Use the search bar labeled Set a default for a file type or link type to find the application you wish to manage. Click on the application icon in the list to reveal the file types or protocols associated with it.
  4. Select your preferred program. Click on the specific file type or protocol you wish to reassign. A dialog box will appear asking how you want to open that file; select your preferred application from the list.
  5. Set as default. Click the Set default button to confirm your selection. Windows will immediately apply this change, and all files of that type will now trigger the new application.
