How to Block Camera and Microphone Access in Windows

Learn how to securely disable camera and microphone access across your Windows system or for specific applications to ensure privacy.

  1. Open Privacy & Security settings. Press the Windows key and click the Settings icon represented by a gear. Navigate to the left-hand sidebar and select Privacy & security.
  2. Disable system-wide camera access. Scroll down to the App permissions section and click Camera. Toggle the Camera access switch to Off to block all applications and services from using the camera hardware.
  3. Disable system-wide microphone access. Return to the Privacy & security menu. Select Microphone under the App permissions header and toggle the Microphone access switch to Off.
  4. Restrict individual application permissions. If you require camera or microphone usage for specific apps, turn the main switch to On. Scroll through the app list below and manually toggle the switch to Off for every individual application you do not trust.
  5. Confirm hardware status in Device Manager. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Expand the Cameras or Audio inputs and outputs categories, right-click your device, and select Disable device to force a hardware-level cutoff.
