How to Update Recovery Information for a Windows Account

Secure your Windows account by updating your recovery email and phone number. Follow these steps to ensure you maintain access to your Microsoft account.

  1. Open Account Security Settings. Open the Settings app by pressing Win + I. Navigate to Accounts in the left sidebar and select Your info, then click on the Microsoft account link to open your account portal in your default web browser.
  2. Navigate to the Security Dashboard. Once signed in to the account portal, locate the top navigation bar. Click on the Security tab to view your current sign-in and recovery options.
  3. Verify Your Identity. Click on Advanced security options. You may be prompted to verify your identity by entering a code sent to your existing registered phone number or email address.
  4. Add or Remove Recovery Methods. Under the Ways to prove who you are section, select Add a new way to sign in or verify. Choose between an email address or a phone number and follow the on-screen prompts to input the new information.
  5. Confirm the New Credentials. Check the new email or phone number for a verification code. Enter this code into the security portal to validate the new recovery method.
  6. Remove Outdated Information. Review your list of recovery methods. Click the Remove button next to any old phone numbers or email addresses you no longer have access to.
