How to set up passkeys in Windows 11

Secure your accounts with Windows passkeys. Follow this guide to manage, save, and use passkeys for streamlined, password-free authentication.

  1. Verify Windows Hello authentication. Open the Settings app by pressing Win + I. Navigate to Accounts > Sign-in options and ensure that PIN, Face recognition, or Fingerprint recognition is fully configured. Passkeys require Windows Hello to function as the local biometric or PIN validator.
  2. Navigate to the passkeys management menu. In the Settings app, go to Accounts > Passkeys. This dashboard displays every passkey currently stored on your Windows device.
  3. Create a passkey on a supported website. Open your preferred web browser and sign in to a service that supports passkeys. Navigate to the account security or login settings within that website and select the option to add or create a passkey.
  4. Confirm the passkey registration. A Windows Security dialog will appear automatically. Verify the request and authenticate using your Windows Hello PIN or biometric scan to finalize the creation of the passkey on your device.
  5. View and delete existing passkeys. Return to Settings > Accounts > Passkeys to manage your keys. Select the ellipsis (...) next to any entry to view details or click Delete to revoke the passkey from your Windows device.
