How to Securely Reset a Windows PC

Follow these steps to factory reset your Windows PC, clear personal data, and restore system settings to original defaults.

  1. Back up your essential files. Before initializing a reset, copy all necessary documents, photos, and configurations to an external storage device or cloud service. A system reset will purge all user profiles and personal files from the primary drive. Verify your backup integrity before proceeding.
  2. Access the Recovery settings menu. Open the Start menu and select the Settings gear icon. Navigate to System > Recovery in the left-hand sidebar. Locate the Recovery options section.
  3. Start the reset process. Click the Reset PC button located next to Reset this PC. A window will appear offering to Keep my files or Remove everything. Select Remove everything to ensure all personal data is deleted and the PC is returned to a clean factory state.
  4. Select data cleaning options. Choose Change settings if you wish to perform a full drive wipe. Toggle Data erasure to On to securely overwrite the drive; this prevents deleted files from being recovered by data forensics tools. Select Confirm, then proceed to the next prompt.
  5. Finalize the installation. Review the summary of choices and select Reset. The computer will restart automatically to begin the reinstallation of Windows. Ensure the device remains plugged into a power source throughout the entire cycle to prevent corruption.
