How to verify camera and microphone functionality on Windows

Validate your Windows PC hardware by testing the webcam and microphone through System Settings. Ensure your peripherals are ready for communication apps.

  1. Open the Windows Settings app. Press the Windows key on your keyboard and select the Settings gear icon. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut to launch the interface directly.
  2. Test the integrated microphone. Navigate to System > Sound. Locate the Input section and speak into your microphone; the Test your microphone bar should pulse in response to your voice.
  3. Review microphone privacy permissions. Go to Privacy & security > Microphone. Ensure the Microphone access toggle is set to On and that Let apps access your microphone is enabled.
  4. Test the integrated camera. Navigate to Bluetooth & devices > Cameras. Select your integrated webcam from the list to view the device properties and ensure the Status displays as Connected.
  5. Verify camera privacy permissions. Return to Privacy & security > Camera. Ensure Camera access is set to On and that Let apps access your camera is toggled to On.
  6. Check for driver conflicts. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Expand Cameras and Audio inputs and outputs, right-click your hardware, and select Update driver if a yellow warning icon appears.
