How to set a default browser on Windows 11

Follow these steps to change your default web browser on Windows 11. Learn how to update file associations for HTML, HTTP, and HTTPS protocols.

  1. Open Windows Settings. Press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu. Click the Settings icon, represented by a gear, or press Windows + I to open the Settings application directly.
  2. Access Apps settings. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Apps. This menu manages installed software, optional features, and default application assignments.
  3. Select Default apps. Click on the Default apps menu item within the Apps settings page. This section allows you to modify the software associated with specific file types and protocols.
  4. Locate your preferred browser. Use the search bar labeled Set a default for a file type or link type of link. Enter the name of the browser you wish to set as the new default, then click on the app name in the results.
  5. Assign as default. Click the Set default button at the top of the application page. Windows will immediately reconfigure common protocols like .html, .htm, HTTP, and HTTPS to open using this browser.
