How to Transfer Files to a New Windows PC

Learn the most efficient methods to migrate your documents, photos, and personal data to a new Windows PC using OneDrive or external storage drives.

  1. Sync your files to OneDrive. On your old PC, open File Explorer and navigate to your user profile folder. Right-click your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders, then select 'Always keep on this device' to ensure full availability. Ensure the OneDrive icon in the system tray shows 'Up to date' to confirm all files have uploaded to the cloud.
  2. Sign in on the new PC. Power on your new PC and complete the initial Windows setup process. Sign in using the same Microsoft account you utilized on your previous machine. Once at the desktop, open the OneDrive folder from the navigation pane in File Explorer to verify your files are syncing automatically.
  3. Configure an external storage drive. If you have files too large for cloud sync, connect an external hard drive to your old PC. Open File Explorer, select the files or folders you wish to move, and copy them using Control + C. Navigate to the external drive in the sidebar and paste them using Control + V.
  4. Import files to the new PC. Eject the external drive from your old PC and plug it into the new unit. Open File Explorer and select the drive letter corresponding to your external device. Highlight the folders you want to move, press Control + X to cut them, then navigate to your local directory on the new PC and press Control + V to paste them.
  5. Confirm file integrity. Open several high-resolution images or large documents to confirm they open correctly on the new machine. Check the 'Properties' of your main folders to ensure the file counts and total sizes match your original PC. Delete the copied files from the external drive only after you have confirmed everything is accessible.
