Configuring Essential Software on a New Windows PC
Streamline your new Windows PC setup by installing core utilities and browsers using the official Microsoft Store and direct installer methods.
- Run Windows Update first. Open the Settings app by pressing Win + I. Navigate to Windows Update in the left sidebar and select Check for updates to ensure your system architecture is fully patched before installing third-party software.
- Download your preferred browser. Launch Microsoft Edge and navigate to the official website of your chosen browser. Download the installer executable and run it, following the prompts to set it as your system default if required.
- Utilize the Microsoft Store. Open the Microsoft Store from the taskbar. Search for trusted applications such as PowerToys, VLC, or Spotify, and click Install to initiate the sandboxed installation process.
- Use Winget for bulk installation. Right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin). Use the command 'winget install <appname>' to automatically download and install software like VS Code, Firefox, or 7-Zip without manual interaction.
- Remove pre-installed bloatware. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Review the list for pre-installed trial software or OEM utilities you do not use, click the three-dot menu next to the item, and select Uninstall.
