How to Change Default Download Locations in Windows 11

Learn how to redirect your default browser and system download folders in Windows 11 to organize your files and optimize storage space.

  1. Modify Microsoft Edge download settings. Open Microsoft Edge and click the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner. Select Settings, then navigate to the Downloads tab in the left-hand sidebar. Click the Change button next to the Location field and select your preferred folder.
  2. Adjust Google Chrome download path. Launch Chrome, click the three-dot menu, and select Settings. Select Downloads from the left menu. Click the Change button within the Location section and navigate to your desired directory.
  3. Relocate the system Downloads folder. Open File Explorer and right-click the Downloads folder under Quick access or This PC. Select Properties and navigate to the Location tab. Click Move and select the new destination folder on your preferred drive.
  4. Confirm folder path changes. Open File Explorer and navigate to your new folder location. Right-click any file within the folder, select Properties, and confirm that the path matches your new directory settings.
  5. Restart browser applications. Close all active browser windows and restart them to ensure the updated settings take effect immediately. Initiate a test download to confirm the file lands in the new destination.
