How to Configure Network Profile Types in Windows 11
Learn how to switch between Public and Private network profiles in Windows 11 to balance security and device discoverability.
- Open the Network & internet settings. Click the Start button and select Settings. Navigate to the Network & internet tab in the left-hand sidebar.
- Access your current connection properties. Select the Properties link at the very top of the Network & internet menu. This displays the settings for your currently active network connection, whether Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Choose the Network profile type. Under the Network profile type section, select either Public or Private. Selecting Public hides your computer from other devices on the network, which is ideal for cafes or airports. Selecting Private allows your PC to be discoverable and share files with trusted devices.
- Confirm the settings update. Once you select the profile, Windows applies the firewall settings immediately. You do not need to restart your computer to make these changes effective.
