How to Use Your Smartwatch for Contactless Payments

Set up and use your smartwatch for contactless payments. Complete guide for Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, and Wear OS devices with security tips.

1. Open your smartwatch's wallet app. Launch Apple Pay on Apple Watch by pressing the side button twice, or open Samsung Pay/Google Pay on Android watches through the app drawer. The wallet app displays your stored payment cards and opens the NFC payment interface.
2. Add your payment cards to the wallet. Tap the plus icon to add a new card. Use your watch's camera to scan your card or manually enter the card number, expiration date, and security code. Your bank will verify the card through SMS or email confirmation.
3. Set your default payment card. Select your preferred card as the default payment method in the wallet app settings. This card appears first when you open the payment interface. You can change the default card anytime or select different cards before each transaction.
4. Position your watch near the payment terminal. Hold your watch within 2 inches of the contactless payment reader at checkout. The screen shows the payment interface and your watch face should be parallel to the terminal surface for optimal NFC connection.
5. Authenticate the payment. Complete authentication using your watch's method: enter your PIN, use fingerprint scanning, or rely on wrist detection if enabled. The watch vibrates and displays a checkmark when payment processes successfully.
6. Verify the transaction completed. Check your watch display for payment confirmation and transaction details. The merchant's terminal will also show approval. Keep your watch near the reader until both devices confirm the successful payment.
