How to Get Turn-by-Turn Directions on Apple Watch

Learn how to use Apple Maps on your Apple Watch for real-time navigation, haptic feedback, and efficient turn-by-turn routing.

  1. Open Maps and enter a destination. Press the Digital Crown to open your app grid and tap the Maps icon. Tap Search to enter a location using Dictation, Scribble, or the keyboard, or select a recent location from the list.
  2. Choose a transportation method. Once the destination appears, select your preferred mode of transit by tapping the Driving, Walking, Transit, or Cycling icons. The app will calculate the optimal route based on your selection and current traffic conditions.
  3. Start the navigation route. Tap the Go button to begin turn-by-turn navigation. Your Apple Watch will immediately display the first instruction on the screen.
  4. Monitor haptic feedback and prompts. Follow the on-screen arrows and distance indicators as you move. Your watch provides distinct haptic pulses to notify you when a turn is approaching; a steady vibration indicates a turn, while a series of taps signals a change in direction.
  5. View the turn list or map overview. Scroll the Digital Crown to view the list of upcoming turns. To switch to the map view, tap the route overview card; pinch or drag the screen to inspect different sections of your route.
  6. Terminate the active route. When you have arrived at your destination or wish to stop navigation, firmly press the screen and tap End. The maps app will clear the route data and return to the primary search interface.
