How to use Double Tap on Apple Watch

Master the Double Tap gesture on Apple Watch to control apps and notifications hands-free. Follow these steps to enable and customize the feature.

  1. Enable Double Tap in Settings. Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch. Navigate to Gestures, select Double Tap, and toggle the switch to On.
  2. Perform the gesture. Lift your wrist to wake the screen. Tap your index finger and thumb together twice in a quick, deliberate motion.
  3. Manage primary actions. Use Double Tap to dismiss timers, stop alarms, play or pause media, or answer phone calls. In most apps, the gesture triggers the primary button, such as the confirmation prompt or the play icon.
  4. Adjust playback settings. Within the Double Tap settings menu, choose whether the gesture triggers Play/Pause or Skip Track for media playback. Select your preferred behavior to optimize your interaction flow.
  5. Confirm gesture registration. Observe the small blue Double Tap icon at the top of the screen when the gesture is detected. If the icon pulses, the watch has successfully registered your input.
