How to Track Sleep with a Smartwatch

Set up automatic sleep tracking on your smartwatch to monitor sleep stages, duration, and quality. Works with Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, and Fitbit.

  1. Enable sleep tracking in your watch settings. Open the companion app on your phone (Apple Watch app, Galaxy Watch app, or Fitbit app). Navigate to Health > Sleep or Sleep > Sleep Tracking. Toggle on automatic sleep detection and set your typical bedtime and wake-up schedule.
  2. Configure sleep mode activation. Enable Sleep Mode or Do Not Disturb during sleep hours. This dims the display, mutes notifications, and optimizes battery life during tracking. Set it to activate automatically 30 minutes before your scheduled bedtime.
  3. Wear your watch with proper fit. Position the watch one finger-width above your wrist bone with the band snug but not tight. The sensors need consistent skin contact without restricting blood flow. Clean the sensors and your wrist before bed to ensure accurate readings.
  4. Charge your watch before bedtime. Ensure your smartwatch has at least 30-40% battery before sleep. Most watches need 6-8 hours of power for complete sleep tracking. Charge during your evening routine while getting ready for bed.
  5. Review your sleep data. Check your sleep metrics each morning in the companion app. Review sleep stages (light, deep, REM), total sleep time, and sleep efficiency scores. Look for patterns in sleep quality relative to daily activities and bedtime consistency.
  6. Calibrate tracking accuracy. Manually log sleep and wake times for the first week to help the watch learn your patterns. Correct any obviously incorrect automatic detections in the app. Update your sleep schedule as your routine changes.
