How to Set Up Apple Watch from Scratch

Complete guide to setting up your new Apple Watch. Pair with iPhone, configure settings, install apps, and customize your watch face step-by-step.

  1. Power on your Apple Watch. Hold the side button on your Apple Watch for 2-3 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Place the watch on the charging cable if the battery is below 50%. Wait for the Hello screen to appear in multiple languages.
  2. Open the Watch app on your iPhone. Launch the Watch app on your iPhone. Tap 'Start Pairing' when prompted. If you don't see this option, tap the My Watch tab at the bottom, then tap 'Pair New Watch'. Select your Apple Watch model from the list.
  3. Align the watch with your iPhone camera. Point your iPhone camera at the Apple Watch screen when the pairing animation appears. Center the watch face within the camera viewfinder until your iPhone recognizes the watch. You'll see a confirmation message when pairing is successful.
  4. Configure your Apple Watch settings. Select 'Set Up as New Apple Watch' or 'Restore from Backup' if you're replacing an existing watch. Choose your preferred wrist, agree to the terms and conditions, and create a passcode for your watch. Enable or disable features like Wrist Detection and Digital Crown haptics.
  5. Install apps and sync data. Choose which iPhone apps to install on your Apple Watch. Select 'Install All' for automatic installation or 'Choose Later' to manually select apps. Wait for the sync process to complete, which transfers your contacts, calendar, and other data to the watch.
  6. Set up Apple Pay and health features. Add credit or debit cards to Apple Pay by opening Wallet & Apple Pay in the Watch app. Set up health monitoring features like heart rate notifications and fall detection. Configure Emergency SOS settings and add emergency contacts.
  7. Customize your watch face and complications. Press and hold the watch face on your Apple Watch, then swipe to browse available faces. Tap 'Customize' to modify colors, complications, and other elements. Add shortcuts to frequently used apps by selecting them as complications.
