How to Update Your iPhone Before Pairing a New Apple Watch
Ensure a seamless Apple Watch setup by updating your iPhone to the latest iOS version first. Follow these steps to prepare your device.
- Check for current software version. Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Navigate to General, then tap Software Update to see if a newer version of iOS is available for your device.
- Perform a manual iCloud backup. Before applying a major system update, navigate to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup. Tap Back Up Now to ensure your current data is saved in case of an installation error.
- Initiate the software download. If an update is pending, tap Download and Install. Enter your device passcode if prompted to authorize the download process over your Wi-Fi network.
- Execute the system update. Once the download completes, tap Install Now. Your iPhone will restart automatically; do not force a reboot or disconnect power while the Apple logo or progress bar is displayed.
- Verify the successful update. After the iPhone restarts, return to Settings > General > Software Update. Confirm that the screen displays the message stating your software is up to date.
- Begin the Apple Watch pairing. With your iPhone now on the latest firmware, open the Watch app on your phone. Bring your Apple Watch close to the iPhone to initiate the proximity pairing animation.
