How to Configure Sleep Tracking on Apple Watch

Configure your Apple Watch to accurately monitor sleep stages, respiratory rate, and blood oxygen levels throughout the night.

  1. Enable sleep tracking in the Health app. Open the Health app on your iPhone and tap the Browse tab at the bottom right. Select Sleep from the health categories list and scroll down to tap Set Up Sleep under the Set Up Sleep section.
  2. Set your sleep schedule. Define your sleep goal in hours and select the days you want your schedule to apply. Toggle the Sleep Schedule switch to On to allow the watch to automatically enter Sleep Focus mode at your designated bedtime.
  3. Verify watch settings. Open the Watch app on your iPhone and navigate to My Watch > Sleep. Ensure that Track Sleep with Apple Watch is toggled on to allow the watch to record movement and heart rate during rest periods.
  4. Enable wrist detection and heart rate monitoring. Navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Health on your iPhone. Verify that Heart Rate and Wrist Detection are enabled to ensure high-fidelity sleep stage data.
  5. View your sleep data. After wearing your watch to bed, open the Health app on your iPhone the next morning. Tap the Sleep category to view your sleep stages including REM, Core, and Deep sleep.
