How to Fix Smartwatch Not Tracking Steps

Fix step tracking issues on your smartwatch with these proven troubleshooting methods. Get accurate step counts working again in minutes.

  1. Check sensor placement and fit. Ensure the watch sits snugly on your wrist, about one finger-width above your wrist bone. The sensor should maintain constant contact with your skin. Adjust the band so it's tight enough to prevent sliding but loose enough for comfort during arm movement.
  2. Clean the sensors and watch back. Power off the watch and clean the sensor area on the back with a soft, dry cloth. Remove any dirt, sweat, or soap residue that might block the accelerometer or heart rate sensor. For stubborn buildup, use a slightly damp cloth with water only.
  3. Restart the smartwatch. Hold the side button for 10-15 seconds until the watch powers off completely. Wait 30 seconds, then press the side button again to restart. This clears temporary software glitches that can interfere with step detection algorithms.
  4. Calibrate step tracking in the companion app. Open your watch's companion app on your phone and navigate to Health or Fitness settings. Look for step calibration or stride length options. Walk a known distance (like 100 steps) at your normal pace, then input this data to improve accuracy.
  5. Update watch firmware and companion app. Check for firmware updates in the companion app under Settings > About or System Update. Install any available updates, as they often include improved step counting algorithms. Also update the companion app through your phone's app store.
  6. Reset fitness data and permissions. In the companion app, clear existing fitness data and restart step tracking from zero. Verify that the app has permission to access motion sensors and health data on your phone. Re-enable any disabled permissions in your phone's privacy settings.
  7. Perform a factory reset if issues persist. Back up important data through the companion app, then factory reset the watch through Settings > System > Reset. After reset, pair the watch again and test step tracking with a short walk to confirm the sensors are working properly.
