How to Force Restart a Frozen Wearable

Learn the exact button combinations to force restart a frozen smartwatch or fitness tracker and restore system responsiveness.

  1. Verify the screen status. Confirm the display is frozen and not merely displaying a low-battery icon. If the screen is black, connect the device to its charger for 15 minutes before attempting a restart.
  2. Trigger the hardware reset. Press and hold both the Digital Crown and the side button simultaneously for at least 10 seconds. Do not release the buttons when the power-off slider appears; continue holding until the screen goes black.
  3. Release the buttons. Release both buttons immediately once the manufacturer logo or brand icon appears on the display. The device will now begin its standard boot-up sequence.
  4. Test device input. Once the home screen or watch face loads, perform a swipe and tap action to confirm the touch digitizer is functioning. If the interface is still sluggish, navigate to settings to check for available firmware updates.
  5. Clear resource-heavy apps. Open the app switcher by pressing the side button and swipe left on any third-party apps that were running when the freeze occurred. Close these applications to prevent a recurring system hang.
