How to Use Google Home Routines

Create and manage Google Home routines to automate multiple smart devices with a single voice command. Complete setup guide for beginners.

  1. Open the Google Home app. Launch the Google Home app on your phone or tablet. Ensure you're signed in to the same Google account connected to your Google Home device. The app icon appears as a colorful house outline.
  2. Access the Routines section. Tap the 'Routines' tab at the bottom of the screen. If you don't see it, tap 'Automations' then select 'Routines' from the top menu. This displays all existing routines and the option to create new ones.
  3. Create a new routine. Tap the plus (+) button or 'Add a routine' to start building your automation. Choose whether to start with a suggested routine template or build a custom one from scratch. Templates include 'Good morning,' 'Bedtime,' and 'Leaving home.'
  4. Set your trigger phrase. Tap 'When I say...' to record or type your voice command. Speak clearly and choose a phrase that's easy to remember but unlikely to trigger accidentally. Avoid common words that appear in normal conversation.
  5. Configure actions. Tap 'Add action' to select what happens when you trigger the routine. Choose from device controls, media playback, weather announcements, calendar updates, or custom voice responses. Each action appears as a separate item you can reorder by dragging.
  6. Test and save your routine. Tap 'Save' to finalize your routine, then say your trigger phrase to test it. Watch each action execute in sequence and note any devices that don't respond as expected. Return to edit the routine if adjustments are needed.
  7. Manage existing routines. Return to the Routines section to edit, disable, or delete routines. Tap any routine name to modify its triggers or actions. Use the toggle switch to temporarily disable routines without deleting them entirely.
