How to Configure Contact Sensors for Doors and Windows

Learn to install and automate contact sensors on your entry points to trigger smart home routines and security alerts effectively.

  1. Position the sensor components. Clean the door or window frame surface with isopropyl alcohol to ensure proper adhesive bonding. Align the primary sensor unit on the stationary frame and the smaller magnet on the moving door or window sash. Maintain a gap of no more than 15mm between the two components when the entry point is fully closed.
  2. Pair the sensor to your hub. Open your primary smart home application and navigate to the Add Device menu. Follow the manufacturer instructions to place the sensor into pairing mode, typically by holding a physical reset button for five seconds until the LED flashes. Scan the QR code or select the device from the detected list to complete the connection.
  3. Assign the sensor to a room. Select the newly added sensor in your home app and assign it to the specific room where it is installed. Rename the device to a descriptive label, such as Kitchen Window or Garage Side Door. Proper naming ensures voice assistant commands remain accurate.
  4. Create an opening notification. Navigate to the Automations or Routines tab and select Create New. Set the trigger to When Sensor Opens. Select the notification action to receive an immediate push alert on your phone whenever the door or window is accessed.
  5. Set up lighting triggers. Create an automation where the triggering event is When Sensor Opens. Set the action to Turn On Light for the room where the sensor resides. Add a secondary condition to only execute this automation if the current time is between sunset and sunrise.
  6. Test the signal range. Open and close the door or window repeatedly while monitoring the status icon in your app. Verify that the app reflects the closed or open status within two seconds. If the status lag persists, move the smart hub closer to the sensor to improve signal strength.
