How to Set Up and Use Alexa Routines
Create custom Alexa routines to automate smart home devices, control lighting, and streamline daily tasks with voice commands and scheduled triggers.
- Open the Alexa app and navigate to routines. Launch the Amazon Alexa app on your smartphone. Tap the 'More' tab in the bottom right corner, then select 'Routines' from the menu. This opens the routines management screen where you can view existing routines and create new ones.
- Create a new routine. Tap the plus (+) icon in the top right corner to start a new routine. The routine setup screen appears with two main sections: 'When this happens' for triggers and 'Add action' for what Alexa should do. Name your routine something descriptive like 'Good Morning' or 'Movie Time'.
- Set up the trigger. Tap 'When this happens' to choose your trigger type. Select 'Voice' to activate with a custom phrase, 'Schedule' for time-based automation, 'Device' for smart home sensors, or 'Location' for GPS-based triggers. For voice triggers, speak your custom phrase clearly when prompted to record it.
- Add actions to your routine. Tap 'Add action' and choose from categories like Smart Home, Alexa Says, Music, News, or Traffic. For smart home control, select your devices and set their desired states. For multiple actions, tap 'Add action' again and configure additional steps. Actions execute in the order they appear in your list.
- Configure action settings. Customize each action's specific parameters. Set light brightness levels, choose music playlists, select news sources, or configure device-specific settings. For Alexa announcements, type the exact text you want spoken. Review each action to ensure the settings match your intentions.
- Choose the Alexa device. Select which Echo device should execute the routine from the 'From' dropdown menu. Choose a specific device or 'The device you speak to' if you want any Echo to respond to voice triggers. This setting affects where announcements play and which device controls connected smart home hubs.
- Test and save your routine. Tap 'Save' to activate your routine. Test voice-triggered routines immediately by saying your custom phrase to any Echo device. For scheduled routines, verify the timing is correct and wait for the next scheduled execution. Monitor the Alexa app for any error notifications about failed actions.
- Manage and edit existing routines. Return to the Routines section to view all your created routines. Tap any routine to edit triggers, modify actions, or change device assignments. Toggle routines on or off using the switch next to each routine name. Delete outdated routines by tapping the routine and selecting 'Delete Routine'.
