How to Store and Manage Matter Pairing Codes

Secure your smart home ecosystem by properly backing up and managing your Matter pairing codes for device recovery and multi-admin setup.

1. Locate the Matter QR code or numeric string. Inspect the physical housing of your device or the included product manual. Matter devices feature a unique QR code accompanied by an 11-digit numeric pairing code.
2. Photograph the pairing label. Open your smartphone camera and take a high-resolution, glare-free photo of the label. Ensure the QR code and the numeric string are both clearly visible and in focus.
3. Save the code in a password manager. Open your preferred encrypted password manager, such as 1Password or Bitwarden. Create a new entry for the device, label it with the specific room and model name, and input the 11-digit code into the notes field.
4. Test the stored data. Compare the numeric sequence in your password manager against the physical label on the device. Confirm that the digits are transcribed correctly to prevent future entry errors.
5. Tag your entries for easy retrieval. Apply a 'Smart Home' or 'Matter' tag to the entry within your password manager. This allows you to filter and find all pairing codes quickly when configuring a new smart home controller.
