How to Recreate Smart Home Routines

Learn how to systematically migrate and recreate your smart home routines across platforms to restore automation functionality after a hub reset.

  1. Catalog current automation parameters. Capture screenshots of each existing automation sequence before removing them. Note the specific trigger, such as time of day or sensor state, and the resulting action for every connected accessory. This inventory serves as your primary reference for the recreation process.
  2. Delete redundant or broken routines. Navigate to the Home tab and select the Automation icon. Locate the routines associated with the removed or updated hardware, tap the routine, scroll to the bottom, and select Delete Automation. Cleaning these entries prevents conflicts with new automation logic.
  3. Create a new automation sequence. Tap the plus icon in the top right corner of the Automation tab. Select Add Automation to open the creation interface. Choose the appropriate trigger category, such as A Sensor Detects Something or A Time of Day Occurs.
  4. Define trigger conditions. Select the specific accessory or time trigger based on your documented inventory. Define the necessary conditions, such as Only When I Am Home or during specific sunset/sunrise windows. Tap Next to proceed to the accessory selection screen.
  5. Assign accessory actions. Select the accessories you wish to control within this automation. Tap Next and configure the state for each device, such as setting a light to 50% brightness or locking a smart deadbolt. Tap Done to save the new routine.
  6. Test the reconstructed routine. Manually trigger the automation to verify execution. If the routine relies on a sensor, physically activate that sensor to confirm the command executes. If the routine is time-based, use the Test This Automation button within the automation settings page.
